Lewis W. Dunton, Jr. of Melrose and Rockport, vice president of A. C. Lawrence Leather Co., died Thursday at Louise Caroline Nursing Home in Saugus. He was 79. Born in Spencer, he graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1930 and Harvard University in 1934. A World War II veteran, Mr. Dunton received a commission in the Navy through the Harvard ROTC in 1934 and carned a Purple Heart and Silver Star for action in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Following World War II he served in the U.S.Naval Reserves until 1959 and attained the rank of rear admiral. In addition, he was chairman and director of the Calfskin Tanners Group, a retired trustee of the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, an alumni trustee of the Massachusetts Gamma Chapter SAE at Harvard, a coach for Little League in Melrose, and a member of the board of directors at the Battleship USS Massachusetts Memorial, the Tanners Council of America, the Sons of the American Revolution, and the Mayflower Descendants. Mr. Dunton was also a member and deacon of the First Congregational Church, Melrose. He is survived by his wife, Mary (Gable); a son Frank Prouty Dunton of Rockport; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service for Mr. Dunton will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday in First Congregational Church, Melrose. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Spencer.
